Smart TV's and why you want one

What is a smart TV? Similar to a smart phone, a smart TV can offer a number of "Internet connected services" unlike a regular TV. Most smart TV's offer apps,media streaming,Web browsing,games Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) which allows for any video to be streamed via the internet. Smart TV's use a system called DLNA which lets you stream media from computers to your TV. This ability may some day do away with the need for DVR's.

Connection of your smart TV is usually done by way of an Ethernet cable plugged into the back of the TV. While some TV's have wireless capabilities built in, the preferred method is always a hard wired connection.

What can my smart TV do? While smart TV's do allow for some web browsing, the most exciting prospects will be video-on-demand(VOD) services along with the current ability to stream movies through companies such as Netflix and Blockbuster to name a few. Skype will also be another useful application.

All smart TV's have a home page that allow access to its different functions. Manufacturers will show links to their apps store on this page.

How do I take advantage of this technology if I don't want to buy a new TV? Several companies offer set top boxes with smart features built in. Most new blu ray  players offer smart TV features.
